The countdown to Augusta is officially on with the Masters just a week away. Before we dive into all things Green Jacket, we need to take a step back as there is more golf on the schedule. The Valero Texas Open is upon us, and despite its spot on the schedule, this is a legit field and a legit event. Guys are looking to tune up their game at the right time, and picking off a win here certainly would accomplish that. The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is the venue, and it’s been the host of this tournament for over a decade. The par 72 is just under 7,500 yards and provides a reasonable test for the golfers if the conditions call for it. Even with the length, golfers don’t need to be bombers here, as we’ve seen a lot of iron specialists pepper the leaderboard over the years. Tee-to-green precision is always the name of the game, and that doesn’t change this week.
Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, and Hideki Matsuyama lead us off on the betting boards. From there, it’s a ton of guys with PGA Tour wins and names who will not just be a threat this week but also at Augusta. The place in the schedule actually helped to strengthen this field, as a lot of players want the tune-up before the major next week. For betting purposes, this gives us options up and down the board to attack. Let’s dive into a few names to consider as you build out your Valero Texas Open card.
PGA Outright Pick #1: Matthew Fitzpatrick
Let’s get it started with a solid price on Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is just sitting there in the mid 20-1 range. Fitzpatrick has been up and down to begin 2024, but he flashed some of that major winning talent he possesses last time out at the Players. The fifth-place finish at Sawgrass was a big boost, and we saw not only a hot putter but an uptick tee to green. His putting is highly volatile, but Fitzpatrick really gaining with his ball striking is what captured me.
Unlike a lot of this field, he doesn’t have the course history here, but the layout should fit his game. He is sneaky off the tee and should be able to attack these par 5’s. If we can get an uptick in the short game for Fitzpatrick, which is usually a strength, then there is no reason he can’t find a win right before heading to Augusta.

PGA Outright Pick #2: Byeong Hun An
It never feels great clicking a guy with zero career wins on the PGA Tour at 33-1, but An has to be on the short list of threats to break through. His game has been consistent in 2024, with just one missed cut on the resume. Now, that missed cut was last time out at The Players, but a handful of water balls will do that to anyone. Before that he finished eighth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and was runner-up to get the season started in Hawaii.
An is rock solid off the tee, and that will pay dividends here. Normally his putter is the crazy liability, as it has stopped many top-end finishes over the years, but lately that hasn’t been the case. An actually has gained strokes putting in three straight events, and I feel comfortable in his flat stick doing its part. Coming off a missed cut, it’s a nice buy-back here, and I expect to see An once again in the hunt.

PGA Outright Pick #3: Christian Bezuidenhout
I took a one-week break from betting Bezuidenhout, and now we are back in it. Yes, for you more observant readers, the reason for the break was he wasn’t in the field, but let’s get back to the important stuff. Bezuidenhout has been all over the leaderboard, and I still firmly believe he will be a winner on the PGA Tour. The last time out he finished ninth at the Valspar, and he will be looking to build on the success here.
When looking at the strokes gained data, it is easy to see why Bezuidenhout is giving himself chance after chance to find wins on tour. He has gained strokes putting in five straight events and lost just once with the irons in 2024. That is a formula that can work here at TPC San Antonio, and the number continues to be in a range that I am willing to buy. A win on Bezuidenhout at any point is going to pay us off with interest, and this is another week where he could find himself in the mix.
