Golf once again takes center stage in the sports world as the second major of the season gets underway with the 2025 PGA Championship. We already saw a season’s worth of drama at Augusta for the Masters. Although the storylines might not be to the level of Rory McIlroy winning, we still have the strongest field possible with virtually every top player looking to add a major to the resume. The 2025 PGA Championship brings us to a familiar layout as Quail Hollow gets to host, which is a regular stop on tour. Typically, Quail serves as the site of the Wells Fargo Championship, but we did see them as the PGA host back in 2017, so this isn’t uncharted territory. Let’s get into the PGA Championship best bets for outrights this week.

The field will be familiar with Quail Hollow, so it should fool a lot of players. What will cause problems is the par-71, 7,600-yard layout that will force aggression off the tee or some extremely long iron shots in. With a field this good, we cannot rule out any type of skillset, but it is clear that being able to get it out there off the tee is an advantage.
Regardless of how far golfers drive it, they will need to have the irons dialed in. Then being familiar with these Bermuda green will come in handy. To win a major, golfers need the entire skillset on display, and I expect Quail Hollow to be a legitimate test for this field.
PGA Championship PGA Best Bet: Justin Thomas
Any tournament with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler has immense risk in of targeting anyone else to win. We know the firepower those two bring, but on the other hand, if they don’t win, we get very reasonable numbers on the rest of the field. Take Thomas at 22-1 on DraftKings, for example. He is playing some of the best golf of anyone in the world, and we still get a reasonable numbers despite the momentum coming into the event. Thomas won the Heritage in late April and followed it up with a second-place finish last week at the Truist. He has shown he can get on a tear and win multiple events in a short amount of time, so why not have him go back-to-back at Quail Hollow for PGA Championship wins?
In his 2017 victory here, Thomas’ entire game was working, including a hot putting week. That isn’t out of the norm lately for him, as he gained four or more strokes putting in three of his last five events. Furthermore, he lost strokes with the irons just once in 2025, and that is the type of consistency we want here. Add in that he is among the best around-the-green players in the world, and we start to build the case for why Thomas could be a threat this week.
It is not without concerns, especially off the tee, as he has had far too many doubles or worse on the card in 2025 . However, we are getting a fantastic number on a guy coming in with his game in red-hot form, so let’s see if he can outduel the likes of McIlroy and Scheffler as the tournament unfolds.
PGA Championship Best Bet: Justin Thomas (22-1 at ngs)
PGA Championship PGA Best Bet: Hideki Matsuyama
I actually thought Matsuyama was poised to storm last week at the Truist Championship, but a bad Sunday ruled that out. Still, we got flashes of what the former Masters winner can do, and we know this is a good setup for him given his abilities tee to green.
Matsuyama’s results at both Wells Fargo and the previous PGA Championship reveal a similar theme: Great ball striking and a lot of average-at-best putting. I cannot tell you if that will flip this week, but back in 2017 he gained 4.5 strokes on these greens en route to a fifth-place finish. More importantly, when Matsuyama putts he usually is in contention given how strong the rest of his game is. One thing that sometimes gets lost is that he is one of the best around-the-green players in the world, so getting up and down on some of these daunting holes is a potential asset for him this week.
Matsuyama sits at a reasonable 45-1, which again speaks to the strength of the field. If he can sync up a hot putter with his typical tee-to-green game, then he will get to the weekend with a shot to cash this ticket.
PGA Championship Best Bet: Hideki Matsuyama (45-1 at FanDuel)
PGA Championship PGA Best Bet: Patrick Cantlay
All of us are waiting for Cantlay to break through in a major. Cantlay has all the skills to put himself among the world’s best, but he didn’t get his 2025 major year off on the best foot, finishing 36th at The Masters.
Cantlay has five career top-10s in majors, but a player of this caliber certainly should be hunting wins. I actually backed Cantlay last week at the Truist, and he was in the hunt until a poor Saturday took him out of contention. Sunday was a fantastic round, which vaulted him into fourth and gave him some momentum into this week. The big positive is the ball-striking numbers with the irons, as Cantlay gained another 5.5 strokes last week and has been positive with the irons in every event since February. That is the single best indicator of success, as that type of iron play will translate to any course in any conditions players might face.
Cantlay’s odds are in the same bucket as Matsuyama, so I will be doubling up at the 45-1 range. It is a little alarming to see Cantlay’s win drought nearing three years on tour, but the numbers do not lie, and he has the game to tackle a field of this caliber. If he continues to have the tee-to-green game he has shown in recent weeks, Cantlay could find himself among the leaders come Sunday with a chance to get it done on the biggest stage.
PGA Championship Best Bet: Patrick Cantlay (45-1 at DraftKings)
One thing worth mentioning is the weather as we get closer to lock. It has been raining quite a bit in North Carolina leading up to the event, which could affect conditions. Tee time stacks and other edges may open up if we see any potential wind splits later in the week.
