The PGA Tour season continues after an incredible US Open last week. The drama, storylines and narratives all will continue to build after seeing Rory McIlroy melt down late and Bryson DeChambeau capture his second US open. The Travelers Championship is another top-end event, and although it is not a full field, there are plenty of opportunities to make some money. McIlroy withdrew, but besides that the field is loaded, making the betting board an interesting breakdown here in Connecticut. Let’s dive into the best PGA bets for the 2024 Travelers Championship.

The PGA Tour heads to TPC River Highlands, which is the typical venue for the Travelers, so we have a good idea of what skillset and formula is needed to hoist this trophy. This course has a nice mix of holes, which allow players a lot of different ways to attack.
One thing that isn’t required here is distance, as it’s one of the shortest courses the PGA Tour can offer. That means short hitters aren’t at a huge disadvantage, and putting an emphasis on hitting the fairways is important. Still, we’ve seen some big hitters succeed here, so it’s a blend of what you want off the tee.
Besides that, it’s the typical mid-range irons and ball striking in general that carry the most weight. Greens are bent/poa, which is something to consider if you get that granular.

PGA Outright Pick #1: Patrick Cantlay
Man, what a difference a week can make in the world of PGA Tour golf. Last week going to Patrick Cantlay in any market would have been considered borderline crazy given he came into the US Open off multiple disappointing showings. More concerning was that his ball striking and overall strokes gained were not to the level of someone as good as Cantlay. Fast forward and he has a third-place finish at the US Open thanks to five strokes gained on the approach and another five on the greens. That’s a formula for success, and it came at the perfect time given where Cantlay’s season was heading. The classic question of whether or not he found something comes into play here, and I am betting that he did in fact find something last week.
If I am correct in that Cantlay is back towards his normal form, then what a time for it as he’s coming to a course he seemingly loves. Cantlay is working on making it seven straight top-15s or better at TPC River Highlands, which is consistency we don’t see too often on tour. He absolutely crushes this course tee to green and doesn’t seem to struggle on these green complexes. The number has come down to 20-1, but if Cantlay did actually turn the corner, then now is the time to buy.

PGA Outright Pick #2: Tony Finau
Obviously, last week was all about the DeChambeau-McIlroy showdown on Sunday, but Finau almost accidentally won the US Open. He posted -4 and ended up finishing third behind the two contenders. All jokes aside, Finau played quality golf against the best of the best and can carry that momentum here in Cromwell. His ball striking is on point, the change of green surface can only be a good thing, and he sits at a reasonable number.
Finau hasn’t had much success at this layout, but more importantly, his game fits what this course demands. There are no red flags as to why he couldn’t succeed here, and in the past, it’s been a lot of putting woes dragging him down. It’s not to say that can’t happen once again, but given how well Finau is striking it, I want to make sure I have room for him on the card. Like all the numbers post-McIlroy, this has come down, but I am still willing to take a position at 30-1.

PGA Outright Pick #3: Christiaan Bezuidenhout
If the books continue to list Bezuidenhout near 100-1 in 70-man fields, then I will continue to fire, or by many people’s terminology, “donate”. It’s true Bezuidenhout hasn’t found that winning circle, but it’s undeniable he has been close, and his game is good enough to win here in the states. Bezuidenhout’s is a different type of player profile, one that is heavily reliant on elite short games and making putts. Unlike of team no-putt, this is a tougher ask since he doesn’t get to drive the ball farther or show off an elite off-tee game. However, this course doesn’t emphasize distance, and if Bezuidenhout can keep it in the fairways, now we have a situation that works.
Bezuidenhout has a pair of appearances at Travelers, both of which ended with missed cuts while losing strokes putting. That doesn’t concern me in the sense that, if he loses strokes putting, he has a 0% chance to win this event, and coming in third versus missing the cut is all the same in the outright market. If Bezuidenhout can get a handle on these greens, he has plenty of skills to stay afloat and get to the weekend with a chance. I won’t just look to him in the outrights, as he has utility in the matchup and top-20 markets as well.
