Sungjae Im B/W Than 36.5 Finishing Position
Go ahead and load up on Im. After a disastrous start with little consistency, Im looks returned to form. His fourth-place finish last week at the Scottish Open further proved the past three events are connected, rather than a minor blip. We saw strong performances at the John Deere and the Travelers. This is exactly the type of form Im needs to compete at Royal Troon and make his way higher than a 36.5 finishing position. We love him to make the cut, so the rest is grinding out some holes, relying on similar approaches like he did last weekend.
This would also be the best performance in a major this year for Im. He missed the other three cuts while struggling to find consistent play inside his game. My favorite part about tailing Im when he’s hot is how balanced of a golfer he is. Im didn’t lose strokes in any of the key statistical areas over the past three events. It resulted in no worse than a top-14 and should carry into this week. Im — like everyone else — will have to deal with tight landing surfaces on smaller greens. We like Im to carry drives with more accuracy and still hit greens in regulation while missing the fairway.
If you take out the last three majors, Im’s stretch of great golf goes back further: An eighth at Memorial, ninth at the Charles Schwab and fourth at the Wells Fargo. Those are all good signs he’s dialed in.

Tony Finau B/W Than 33.5 Finishing Position
Sometimes all it takes is a quick change of club and things seem to work for the better. That’s Finau over his past five tournaments, including three straight finishes of eighth or higher and a third at the US Open. Not many have played better golf on links courses over the past decade, as Finau is dialed in with his flat stick, making it easier to approach these greens at Royal Troon. The lack of speed on these greens combined with the wind makes them some of the slowest surfaces golfers will see on tour or LIV or anywhere else. It’s almost as if Finau looked ahead five weeks ago and made this putting change specifically for the Open.
Finau played Royal Troon just the one time eight years ago, finishing 18th in his debut. There’s a strong correlation to playing this course — or most links courses — beforehand and having success again. We see the ability to pinpoint approach shots on smaller greens (the opposite of St. Andrews) as a major metric in determining who can beat this course. Finau hits better into the wind than nearly all of the golfers in the field. He’s built to compete and certainly finish better than 33.5.
