The Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl hopes now hinge on the ankle of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The NFL MVP favorite came out of the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first half after rolling his right ankle, and while he was able to finish the 27-20 win, Mahomes was clearly hampered by the injury. The Chiefs Super Bowl odds got worse despite the win, with Patrick Mahomes’ injury now the main concern.
ESPN reported on Sunday afternoon that Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain. An injury of this nature would normally leave a player with a 4-6 week timetable for return, but Mahomes is rehabbing under the belief he’ll be ready to go for the AFC Championship game next Sunday.

Chiefs Super Bowl Odds Following Patrick Mahomes Injury
Per BetMGM, the Chiefs were the favorite at +290 to win the Super Bowl before Saturday. Even after the win, they were bumped back to +300, likely in relation to Mahomes’ injury. They’re tied with the Buffalo Bills for the best odds to win the Lombardi Trophy.
A limping Mahomes still completed 22 of 30 es for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He said after the game that he’d wait to see how the injury feels in the coming days before evaluating his status for the AFC Championship.
“It feels better than I thought it was going to be now,” Mahomes said, per ESPN. “Obviously, I have a lot of adrenaline going right now, so we’ll see how it feels. But I’ll hop right in the treatment and try to do whatever I can to be as close to 100 percent by next week. Luckily for us, we played the early game on Saturday, so we get an extra almost half a day that I can let that ankle rest.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared the same sentiment that the Mahomes injury is still in the “we’ll see” stages.
“Let’s just see how it goes here the next couple days. It’s going to be sore, I know, but let’s see where he is at,” he said. “He’s had this before, and he was able to keep pushing through.”
Mahomes was seen frustrated on the sideline, lobbying with Reid and medical staff to stay in the game despite the clear discomfort. After getting the ankle wrapped and taking a trip to the locker room, Mahomes still looked uncomfortable at times.
“I wanted just to continue to play,” Mahomes said. “I told [Andy] I would do it at halftime, but Coach, in the best interests of me, he made me go back there and get that X-ray before he put me back in the game.
“I thought I could play through it, and then he said, ‘I’m not putting you back in, so you might as well go get the X-ray, and then if it’s negative or whatever, I’ll put you back in.’ So I ran back there, got the X-ray and was able to finish the game.”
The Chiefs have reason to celebrate after making their fifth straight AFC Championship. But there is certainly a different feeling around this playoff run with Mahomes’ injury taking over the headlines. We’ll continue to track the worrisome injury throughout the week.
