Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome plays host to the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup, with the United States hoping to repeat after a convincing 19-9 win over the Europeans back in 2021. The 2023 edition begins Sept. 29, and the latest Ryder Cup odds are as close to a toss-up as you can get — in this preview, we will take a closer look at both teams’ chances of glory.

2023 Ryder Cup Golf Odds Update – Team USA vs. Team Europe

It was not that long ago that Team Europe was a much heavier underdog in the golf odds, but the steam has picked up and the lines are much tighter with only a couple of days to go until the competition begins.

Currently, DraftKings Sportsbook has the USA at -155 to lift the trophy and Europe at +130 to win. At time of writing, Scottie Scheffler (+800), Rory McIlroy (+900), Jon Rahm (+1000) and Viktor Hovland (+1000) have the best odds to finish as the event’s top point scorer.

The action starts Friday and continues Saturday with foursome (alternate shot) and four-ball (best ball) matches, followed by singles matches all day Sunday. The first pairings will be announced at the opening ceremonies on Thursday.

The United States was dominant in 2021, and captain Zach Johnson is hoping his crew can repeat that kind of performance in Italy. The full 2023 USA team will be comprised of:

This will be the first Ryder Cup appearances for Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Max Homa and Sam Burns.

There are at least a few repeat duos expected again given past successes, including Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, and Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. It is also assumed that Collin Morikawa and Max Homa will team up.

Thomas, who has a career Ryder Cup record of 6-2-1, has been a big talking point for this event. His recent form on tour has been terrible, and there were more than a few who thought he should not have made the team, but he ended up being one of the final captain’s picks. We will have to wait and see if Thomas is able to handle what is sure to be a mountain of pressure and regain some of that magic if/when he links up with Spieth in the team portions of the event.

All in all, it is another strong USA group. Scheffler (+450 to be Top Team USA Point Scorer at DraftKings Sportsbook) is the No. 1 golfer in the world at the moment, and the pairing of Schauffele/Cantlay has excelled over the years. The two went a combined 6-1-1 across team and singles matches in the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Europe was disappointing in the 2021 Ryder Cup, but there is reason for optimism ahead of 2023 considering they will be the hosts and have a formidable-looking crew that will be out for revenge.

It will be Ryder Cup debuts for Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg.

Rory McIlroy is +450 to be Top Team Europe Point Scorer at DraftKings Sportsbook and anchors the European team. He is by far the most tested golfer in of Ryder Cup events, with a 12-12-4 record across 28 matches heading into 2023.

The trio of McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland is quite the fearsome group to contend with. Regardless of how the pairings shake out, that is about as good of a team foundation as you can get. We know what McIlroy and Rahm can bring to the table, and Hovland is arguably the most in-form golfer anywhere right now, having just thumped most of the best players in the world at the Tour Championship last month. DraftKings Sportsbook has him at +550 to be the highest scorer for Europe.

The likes of Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Aberg have been playing great golf as well. And while Tyrrell Hatton (2-4-1) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (0-5-0) may have not fared so well at this competition in the past, they have improved measurably since then and will be liking their chances of turning things around in front of the European faithful in Rome. Hatton is currently No. 11 in the world, while Fitzpatrick is No. 8.

There is a great mix of skill sets and experience on the Europe side overall, and they will have tremendous crowd , so Donald has to be fancying his team’s odds of reclaiming the trophy.
