The PGA season rages on with a Valspar Championship this weekend after Scottie Scheffler dominated the PLAYERS Championship last weekend. Scheffler will not be a part of the field as this weekend’s Valspar Championship, but there is still a packed list of star players for bettors to choose from when sorting through potential picks. Based on the latest Valspar Championship betting trends, Jordan Spieth will be a popular man for the weekend.
Valspar Championship Betting Trends: Jordan Spieth a Popular Play
Although has circled long-shot Matthew NeSmith as a name to watch this weekend, most public bettors are getting much more chalky with their picks. The favorites for the event are Justin Thomas (+1000), Jordan Spieth (+1200) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (+1600). Per data analyst John Ewing, the top three most bet players are Jordan Spieth (9.2% of bets), Tommy Fleetwood (6.2% at +2500) and Justin Thomas (6.3%). The most money is on Spieth (11.8%), Fleetwood (7.3%) and Davis Riley (7.2% at +7000).
Spieth comes into the Valspar championship coming off a 19th-place finish (-6) at the PLAYERS. His best finish of the year came at the CJ Cup when he finished sixth. But for Spieth, Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course (where this year’s Valspar Championship is held) has special importance.
It is the same course where Spieth earned his PGA Tour card back in 2013. He has finished 20th or better in five of six of his starts at the club and won the Valspar Championship back in 2015.
“It was everything at the time,” Spieth said of earning his card during his first start at Innisbrook, per Golf Channel. “I didn’t have any status anywhere, and I had made a decision not to go secure Korn Ferry Tour status the week prior, and go to Puerto Rico instead and played well, and then got into here. I wasn’t expecting to play this tournament at all, and I got up-and-down out of the front bunker on 18, made probably like a 6- or 7-footer that I didn’t know if it was going to get me to the dollar amount or not, but I knew it was important.”
Flash forward to this week, and Spieth could really use a win to get back to the top of the golf world and kickstart his 2023 PGA season. With a bit of a weaker field in action, the Valspar Championship betting trends show a lot of people will be hoping Spieth can continue his dominance at Copperhead.
