Per BetMGM data analyst John Ewing, the Will Zalatoris bets have been pouring in. The top three favorites heading into the weekend are Jon Rahm (+650), Rory McIlroy (+900) and Scottie Scheffler (+900). But it’s Zaltoris (+1800) who leads the way in the highest bet ticket percentage (8.8%). He’s followed by McIlroy (8.6%) and Scheffler (5.4%). The highest handle percentage is on McIlroy (29.8%), Zalatoris (8.9%) and Matt Fitzpatrick (5.4%).
Zalatoris finished in a disappointing 38th at last year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational but his poor weekend was thanks in large part to a final round +6. He ended with a strong fourth-place finish at The Genesis Invitational last month, but that marked the only time so far this year that he has crept inside the top 10.
Perhaps some of the betting action on Zalatoris stems from sentimental reasoning. Zalatoris attended Wake Forest on the Arnold Palmer scholarship, and although he never got to meet the PGA legend, he still considered Palmer one of his heroes.
“I got a letter from him congratulating me on winning the U.S. Junior and obviously accepting the scholarship. I’ve got that framed at my parents’ house. It was actually pretty cool,” Zalatoris said about receiving the scholarship, per Golfweek. “Amy Saunders actually wrote me a letter as well after the Masters last year. It was pretty cool to see that tradition ed down in the family.
“Obviously being Rookie of the Year was a huge honor, but being on his scholarship as well at Wake Forest — I always tell people, when you get offered the Arnold Palmer scholarship to go play golf, I think your decision on schools is kind of made for you.”
If his performance at the Genesis Invitational is any indication, Will Zalatoris is finally healthy after suffering from a series of back issues over the past year. He remains one of the most popular players on tour and will make a lot of bettors happy if he can secure the win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
