After an offseason that felt like mere hours, the PGA Tour is set to start up again. The swing season is not the pinnacle of golf, but at the same time, it is an opportunity to attack some lesser-known players in the betting market. A lot of guys will be in attendance looking for that breakthrough win, and it provides a shot for some outright odds at big prices. 2023 Fortinet Championship Outright Bet: Beau Hossler (25-1, FanDuel)
Defending champion Max Homa is here, as are a few other marquee names, but overall, this field is not strong. This immediately points to the guys that have been so close on tour but do not have that elusive win. Beau Hossler has been a guy to back quite a lot over the years, and it so far has ended the same way every time.
Hossler is a little erratic in of strokes gained, but one thing he did very well in 2023 was gaining off the tee. He was positive off the tee in nine of his last 10 events, and that is something to factor at Silverado. His putter can get crazy hot, so it really comes down to whether or not Hossler can improve with his irons. That is a big ask, but at the same time, his game is in solid shape, and this field has him far closer to the top than an average PGA Tour event. There are a ton of first-time winner candidates this week, but Hossler is at the top of the list at 25-1.
2023 Fortinet Championship Outright Bet: Alex Noren (55-1, FanDuel)
We managed to make it zero weeks into the season before Alex Noren appeared on the outright card. First off, 55-1 at FanDuel is a key factor, as other books have dropped into the 40s for Noren. Like all players, his win equity benefits from not having to deal with the top-end guys in this field, even if that also impacts his number in the betting markets. His game also has some aspects that are encouraging.
Noren closed out the end of last season in solid form, making four of five cuts, including a ninth at Rocket Mortgage. Unlike Hossler, it was no thanks to his driving, which consistently put him in bad positions and forced his short game to bail him out. However, he was up to the task often, and Noren’s short game is his biggest weapon this week. In last year’s event here, Noren gained over eight strokes around the green and putting combined but had almost no ball striking with which to pair it. If he can get some ball striking to go with his short game, then Noren could find himself among the leaders. The final point is Noren seems to prefer these easier layouts, and that should be the case with this course.
2023 Fortinet Championship Bet: Greyson Sigg (90-1, FanDuel)
There are going to be a few surprise winners early in the season, and Greyson Sigg can be one of them. He picked up steam late last season, but it was more thanks to consistency than upside. The next step for Sigg is getting in contention more often and getting to Sunday with more opportunities to win.
Sigg ended the season with five of six made cuts while gaining on the approach in all but one event during that stretch. That is the ball striking he needs to have a chance to get the season started quickly. Sigg does not have a glaring weakness, but he also does not have a glaring top-end part of his game either, which might speak to why there has not been more volatility in his finishes. He proved he can be ready to go during swing season, with a ninth last year at Sanderson Farms that was his second-best finish on tour. Sigg at 90-1 belongs in the lottery ticket bucket, and he is someone to keep an eye on in early-season PGA tour events this year.
