Updated Masters Odds After Round 1: Jon Rahm Takes Over
With the double bogey on hole one, Rahm became the first professional in the history of The Masters to post a 65 or lower after giving up two strokes on the first hole. Rahm pulled off the incredible feat by sprinkling in seven birdies and an eagle on the bogey-free remainder of the round.
"If you're going to make a double-bogey," he said, (per Yahoo Sports) "might as well do it on the first hole of the tournament when you have plenty of holes to make it up."
Scottie Scheffler holds the second-best odds (+450) despite sitting three strokes behind the leaders. Scheffler, the reigning Masters champ, has earned the No.1 player in the world ranking by coming out of the gates hot in 2023. Scheffler already has two wins under his best this season (The Phoenix Open & PLAYERS Championship) and remains a threat to win any tournament.
The Masters odds pre-tournament had Scheffler as a co-favorite with Rory McIlroy (+700) and he received the most bets (8.4% at BetMGM) and the highest handle percentage (12.8%). Those public bettors are certainly hoping Scheffler can continue to charge up the leaderboard throughout the tournament as he seeks to continue one of the most dominant stretches of professional golf in PGA history.
It is entirely possible that the most intriguing storyline through one day at Augusta is Brooks Koepka. The four-time major champion was in the midst of a prolonged slump in the PGA before making the move to LIV Golf last season. But he has gotten hot in the Saudi-backed tour, winning the individual title at LIV's Orlando event last weekend.
With a strong first round, Koepka now finds himself in the thick of another major championship and could very well make a statement this weekend that he still remains one of the elite players in the world.
The 32-year-old itted after the round that he gets a little bit more focused when it's time to compete for a major championship.
“Everybody on my team behind the scenes says they can see from the moment we land at a major, I get kind of quiet,” Koepka said, per The Guardian. “I’m not talking. I’m very focused, disciplined, driven.
“There’s only really a couple things I care about; going to work out and going to play golf, and that’s it when we’re here. Nothing else really matters. It’s full focus on this and trying to walk out of here with a Green Jacket.”
The updated Masters odds after day one show Jon Rahm has the inside track to win his first Green Jacket, but with Scheffler, Koepka and many other stars lurking, it should be a fun weekend at Augusta National.
