Questions have circled around Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s job security for most of the year. But ahead of the team’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Wild Card Weekend, owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that McCarthy’s job did not hang in the balance.

Jones was asked during his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan if he would evaluate McCarthy based on the team’s performance against Tom Brady and the Bucs on Monday. He reiterated that the veteran head coach’s job was safe.
“No. I don’t even want to … No. That’s it,” Jones said, per ESPN. “I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”

Mike McCarthy has taken the Cowboys to back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since Chan Gailey did the same in 1998 and 1999. But throughout McCarthy’s tenure, skeptics in the media have often repeated the Cowboys will need more to get over the hump. And even after finishing the regular season 12-5, a 26-6 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 18 has fans feeling the Cowboys are once again set up to fail in the playoffs.
After Dallas lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of last year’s NFL playoffs, Jones itted that he needed more out of his team this season. However, he added that he also wanted to be fair with the expectations he places on McCarthy and his staff.
“I need to win it, but I’ll be candid with you, there are degrees. I want to be fair to everybody concerned. We need to be in the playoffs. We need to be viable in the playoffs for it to be a successful season,” Jones said before the season, per Sportscasting.
Mike McCarthy will have a chance to silence his doubters by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and sending the Cowboys into the next round of the playoffs. But if Tom Brady pulls off the win, Mike McCarthy should draw plenty of blame, and it’ll be interesting to see if Jerry Jones changes his tune.
