Neither of these teams are doing much this year from an offensive standpoint. The Terps are either playing down to lesser opponents or just unable to hang, like last week at Indiana. It’s not much better for Northwestern and their makeshift stadium on the water, as their offense is struggling to compete with everyone.
Maryland’s offense is barely on the plus side in net yards per game (NYPG), while the Wildcats are a meager -44 NYPG on the year. The Terps will play well with Northwestern’s inability to convert on third down – one of the worst teams in conference by a mile. If the Terps had any sense, they would pressure Jack Lausch knowing the run game will struggle to convert big plays.
Lausch isn’t the only offensive concern – although he did hold his own last week against the Hoosiers.
Bill Edwards may be leading his Terps squad to a 3-2 record, but that’s far from the whole story.
Maryland is just not closing the door from a cover standpoint, and it gets worse as the opponents also do. MD is 6-10 last 16 against the spread including 1-7 against the spread against teams with a losing record.
This is going to play out as a Northwestern cover – or close to it. The only way the Wildcats are remotely close to being in this game is via their defense, and Maryland historically taking its foot off the gas.
