The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are a 3.5-run favorite over the Georgia State Panthers tonight. The Yellow Jackets are off to a hot start this season. They began the year on a 6-0 winning streak before dropping Sunday’s game to Cornell. The Panthers aren’t so hot, starting the year 2-5, but they won their last game versus Seton Hall.
We’ve seen the Panthers and Yellow Jackets in action on a weekday just once apiece. The Panthers got obliterated at home by the Georgia Bulldogs in that one, losing by a 15-run margin. The Yellow Jackets scored a comeback road win over Georgia Southern, winning by a three-run margin.
The Yellow Jackets started RHP Logan McGuire last week. He threw for a shaky 6.75 ERA but recorded a promising 15.8 K/9 and a solid 1.25 WHIP. McGuire has an 11.3 K/9 for his career and could feast against a Georgia State offense that’s striking out on just under a quarter of plate appearances.
I also like Tech in this spot because of their offense. The Yellow Jackets have an incredible 1.100 team OPS to start the season, far higher than the .794 the Panthers have recorded. While regression could soon follow, I don’t expect Georgia State’s pitching staff, which owns a collective 8.71 RA9 and 1.710 WHIP, to be the ones to slow Tech down.

Wofford Terriers at Charlotte 49ers

The Wofford Terriers are one of the most interesting teams in college baseball. They lead the NCAA in batting average (.383) and stolen bases (35). Although they lack power and have tallied only three home runs, their OPS (1.019) is still quite impressive. For comparison, Charlotte has 11 home runs but a much worse OPS (.847).
The Terriers will start RHP Braden Hofmeyer while the 49ers will start RHP Jorge DeCardenas. Hofmeyer started the season in good form last week, recording a 2.25 ERA with a 1.5 WHIP in his first start. DeCardenas owns a 3.37 ERA but a 2.27 WHIP over three relief appearances. Wofford’s pitching staff has the advantage in both collective RA9 (5.57 to 7.12) and WHIP (1.571 to 1.731) this year.
Despite Wofford’s strong performance to date, they are road dogs for today’s matchup with Charlotte. Sure, Charlotte’s wins, which came against West Virginia (2x), Virginia Tech and Davidson, look more impressive than Wofford’s wins over Fairleigh Dickinson (3x), Towson (2x) and Bucknell, but the margin of victory is a crucial factorto examine here. Wofford’s six wins have come by an average margin of 8.2, with just two games decided by two runs or fewer. Charlotte’s four wins have come by an average margin of 7.5, almost all of which is due to their 23-run blowout victory over Davidson — two of the club’s wins over West Virginia came by just one run.
Back the Terriers to steal this one outright. Wofford went 9-2 in Tuesday games last year, only losing to Tennessee and Georgia while beating programs like Georgia State and Georgia Tech. Charlotte went a solid 7-4 on Tuesday last year, but having to prepare for an unconventional team like Wofford on short notice should prove too tough for them to overcome.
