Minnesota Twins vs. Toronto Blue Jays First Inning Bet

We kick off our NRFI picks with a matchup of strikeout masters: Pablo Lopez and Kevin Gausman.

Gausman will be getting the Game 1 start and comes in with the second-most strikeouts in baseball this season (237). He’s 22-9 on NRFIs this year and went 1-1 in his no run first inning chances against the Twins this season. Gausman has morphed into a bona fide ace this season, so I’m not worried about that one hiccup against Minnesota earlier this year. In 93 career at-bats, he’s held Twins batters to a .239 average and has amassed 32 strikeouts. We’re dancing with the one who brought us here.

The Twins should be very happy with what they got in the first year of Lopez. His 234 strikeouts were the third most in baseball, and he was top 25 in ERA and WHIP this year as well. Lopez is 23-9 on NRFIs and has cashed it for us in his last two starts. He did get roughed up in his lone start against the Jays earlier this year, but that doesn’t worry me a bit. He’s rested and ready for Game 1, and he can close out the first for us against Toronto’s 29th-ranked first-inning offense.

Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies First Inning Bet

Quick, how many times has Zack Wheeler NRFI’d the Marlins this season … and it’s not zero. That would be cheating. The answer? Three. He’s 3-0 on no run first inning opportunities against Miami this season and has racked up 17 strikeouts in 18 innings. Overall, Wheeler is 26-6 on NRFIs and comes into Game 1 of the playoffs with a two-game NRFI streak. In 144 at-bats against Wheeler, the Marlins are hitting .250 with a .294 OBP. Somehow, the Marlins hitter who has done the most damage against the Phillies righty is Josh Bell, who is 10-for-36 with three homers. I know, it blew my mind too. He doesn’t scare me a bit, and I trust Wheeler, so we’re backing him here in the top of the first.

Oh, it’s always great to see our NRFI King on the mound again. Jesus Luzardo gets the Game 1 nod today, and he’s coming off one of his best starts of the season where he went 7.1 innings, allowed one run and struck out 10 Mets. The young lefty finished the year with a 27-6 NRFI record, including going 2-0 against the Phillies in the regular season. He’s had success against Phillies hitters, holding them to .211/.247/.355 with 30 strikeouts in 76 at-bats. In Luzardo we trust!
