The public may not see this as an interesting pitcher’s duel, but I do. The White Sox will start RHP Dylan Cease (3-3). Cease entered the season close to the top of some analysts’ pitcher rankings but is yet to live up to the hype. Cease owns a 4.22 ERA and a 4.39 xERA. He’ll take on LHP Reid Detmers (1-5), whose 4.02 ERA and 4.07 xERA slightly edge him out. However, both pitchers have improved their form over the course of the year — Cease owns a 2.38 ERA in June, while Detmers owns a 2.28 ERA this month.
Although these teams are evenly matched on the mound, they aren’t in the batter’s box. The Angels rank tied for third in expected weighted on-base average, or xwOBA, at .339. They trail only the Braves and Dodgers. In contrast, the White Sox rank a thoroughly unimpressive 29th in the metric at .304. L.A. owes much of that ranking to its superstar players, Shohei Ohtani (.414) and Mike Trout (.393).
Cease has looked effective against the Angels to date. He has lined up against Trout six times, allowing only one hit and racking up three strikeouts. Ohtani has proven more difficult, as the two-way superstar has racked up two hits, including a home run, in eight at-bats against Cease. Still, Cease struck him out twice. In his last start against the Angels, Cease allowed only one hit while striking out 11 batters.
With two solid starting pitchers on the mound, bettors shouldn’t expect much offense early. That’s often been the case for the Angels and White Sox this year. The Angels rank 24th in yes runs first inning percentage, or YRFI%, at 25.3%, while the White Sox rank 28th at 21.5%.
