Coming off a successful series against the Royals, the Cubs now sit at 65-59 and have a straight .500 record on the road. They send Javier Assad to the mound tonight, and despite him being mostly a relief pitcher, he has some starting pedigree. In three August starts, Assad carries a 2.70 ERA and has thrown 80-plus pitches in all three. That should allow him the chance to pitch deep into the game and eat up some innings for Chicago.
On the flip side, the 57-67 Detroit Tigers seem to have little to nothing left to play for. They are returning home after a road trip, which is a positive, but a negative-98 run differential on the year tells the story of a team searching for answers.
