Angels-Tigers MLB Betting Odds for Thursday’s Doubleheader (July 27)

Updated July 27, 2023 | 9:38 am CDT by Isaiah Sirois

The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels were supposed to do battle on Wednesday night, but they’ll now have to play a straight doubleheader on Thursday. Bad weather in Detroit forced the game’s early postponement. The first game will get underway at 1:10 p.m. ET as originally scheduled, and the second will begin 40 minutes afterward. Let’s dive into the Angels-Tigers doubleheader odds for Thursday, July 27.

Angels-Tigers MLB Betting Odds for Sunday Doubleheader | July 27

The odds below represent the last available numbers for each game at DraftKings Sportsbook as of publication; check back later for the updated odds for each game once the markets re-open.

Game 1 Odds: Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers | 1:10 p.m. ET
Angels-Tigers Doubleheader Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook
Angels: -140 | Tigers: +110
Over 8.5: -105 | Under 8.5: -115

Update: the Angels will start RHP Shohei Ohtani and the Tigers will start RHP Michael Lorenzen in Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader.

Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader will be played as originally scheduled. While it remains to be seen whether the Angels and Tigers will use their originally scheduled pitchers for the matchup, the Angels were slightly favored when the market first opened, so it’s likely that they’ll re-open as such barring any breaking news.

The Angels are likely to start RHP Chase Silseth opposite Detroit’s RHP Matt Manning in Thursday’s Game 1. Silseth owns a 4.44 ERA but a 3.88 xERA in limited action this year, a significant improvement over the 6.59 ERA and 6.61 xERA he recorded in a similar sample last year. Manning owns a more impressive 3.19 ERA but his less impressive 4.34 xERA suggests that number isn’t sustainable.

It should come as no surprise that the Angels were (and are likely to remain) road favorites because they have a sizeable edge on offense. The Angels rank fifth in expected weighted on-base average, or xwOBA, at .335. That’s far ahead of the 26th-ranked Tigers at .311. However, the continued absence of superstar Mike Trout, who ranks second on the team in the metric behind Shohei Ohtani, limits the team’s advantage.

Game 2 Odds: Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels | 4:10

Angels: -120 | Tigers: +100
Over 8.5: -120 | Under 8.5: +100

Update: the Angels will start LHP Patrick Sandoval and the Tigers will start RHP Matt Manning in Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader.

The Detroit Tigers were slight favorites over the Los Angeles Angels for the original second game of this series, but that may change if the pitchers do. Currently, LHP Patrick Sandoval and RHP Michael Lorenzen remain the probable pitchers, per ESPN, but we use the term “probable” for a reason. Nothing would stop the Tigers or Angels from swapping things around.

The Tigers were a slim home favorite with the originally scheduled pitching matchup. That makes sense: Sandoval owns a 4.16 ERA and 4.28 xERA, both of which trail Lorenzen’s 3.49 ERA and 4.22 xERA. Although a healthy Angels squad would likely have the offensive firepower necessary to be a road favorite for both games, it’s hard to trust them without Trout.

Bettors should also keep an ear out for which players — if any — the managers intend to rest. It’s unlikely that we’ll see both standard starting lineups in full for two legs of a doubleheader, especially since both teams will play again on Friday. The Angels will stay on the east coast for a game against the Blue Jays, while the Tigers must travel to South Florida for a date with the Marlins.
