Tonight’s Angels-Rangers game won’t be a pitcher’s duel. The Rangers will start RHP Jon Gray, who, while solid, isn’t anything spectacular. He owns a 3.65 ERA but a 4.23 xERA. He’ll take on LHP Reid Detmers, whose 5.27 ERA and 4.63 xERA are even less impressive. Both offenses should be able to take advantage of the starters, and the same should hold true for the bullpens — both teams rank below the league average in bullpen ERA, with Texas eighth worst at 4.52 and L.A. ninth worst at 4.45.
These offenses have the firepower necessary to capitalize against vulnerable pitching. The Angels rank 10th in expected weighted on-base average, or xwOBA, at .325. They trail the third-ranked Rangers and their .341 xwOBA. Although the Angels are certainly worse for wear without superstar Mike Trout, they picked up enough extra talent at the trade deadline, especially slugger C.J. Cron, to offset his absence somewhat.
These teams are both known for putting runs on the board with some pace. Texas ranks second in runs scored per first five innings at 3.5. L.A. ranks sixth at 2.9, giving us a combined total of 6.4. We’ve just got to back Shohei Ohtani in this spot. Yeah, sure, RHP Jon Gray owns a respectable 3.65 ERA and 4.23 xERA to go with a .369 SLG allowed and .399 xSLG allowed, both of which are right around the league average. However, Ohtani is that much better than the league average such that he deserves a steeper price to record multiple bases than the -105 (51.2%) hanging at BetMGM. Ohtani’s .429 xwOBA and .641 xSLG both are in the 99th percentile.
Ohtani has absolutely feasted against opposite-handed pitchers this season. As a LHB, Ohtani is hitting .320 with 53 extra-base hits and a .547 SLG against RHPs. He has gone yard 31 times against RHPs as well. Although Ohtani is always a threat to pick up a walk with RISP, the Rangers haven’t been doing that to him this series, and they’re likely not afraid of him due to his cold snap through the first two games, across which he has a single hit.
Ohtani should regress to his jaw-droppingly efficient mean soon, and that could mean some offensive fireworks in Arlington tonight. Ohtani has seven career at-bats against Gray, through which he has recorded two hits, two extra-base hits and a home run, good for a .857 SLG. Don’t expect Gray to suddenly be able to stop Ohtani tonight, especially since Globe Life Field ranks ninth in park factors for LHBs.
