Teams rarely elevate their practice-squad quarterbacks if they are confident in the starter’s availability. However, that may not be as true as it once was — Cleveland could just be trying to use the emergency quarterback rule to their advantage.
If Watson can’t go, the Browns have rookie backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who looked electric in the preseason. DTR arrived in Cleveland from UCLA, where he played under Chip Kelly for five seasons. He was a fifth-round draft selection and played well enough such that the Browns felt they could trade their initial backup, Josh Dobbs.
