A report out of Coral Gables earlier in the week indicated that quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was dealing with a thumb injury. He apparently hit the thumb on his throwing hand against the helmet of a teammate in practice. Van Dyke was allegedly a limited participant in the subsequent practices.
Head coach Mario Cristobal did not sound concerned about the apparent injury. “He’s ready to roll,” Cristobal told reporters on Monday, “Tyler has been practicing full speed … he is 100% and has been practicing with our team.”

Is Tyler Van Dyke Playing for Miami in Week 1?
Should we take head coach Mario Cristobal’s words about Tyler Van Dyke at face value? I think so. The Hurricanes would benefit more from Cristobal obscuring the status of his starting quarterback than if he had tipped his hand, so Cristobal’s openness and confidence in Van Dyke suggest the quarterback should be available.
Cristobal’s comments come just days after a reporter close to the Miami Hurricanes wrote that Van Dyke was “50/50” for the season opener, adding that if he were to suit up, “he will not very likely be at 100%.” When read alongside that story, Cristobal’s comments appear to be a direct response to the claims made within it.
The odds haven’t moved much, but if you’re looking for some insight from the betting markets, sharps seem to be taking Cristobal’s words at face value, too. The ‘Canes were trading as a 16.5-point favorite earlier in the week, but they are now a 17.5-point favorite at FanDuel.
