How Does the College Baseball Bracket Work?
First-time college baseball bettors and enthusiasts should note that what we saw last weekend won’t mirror the action we get this weekend. The NCAA college baseball tournament uses a structure that oscillates between double-elimination and best-of-three series.
The regional round features four teams participating in a double-elimination tournament. In contrast, the super regional road features the winners of two regional tournaments in a best-of-three series. The winners of each series will then advance to play another double-elimination tournament with a bid to the college world series on the line.
The complicated structure of the NCAA men’s college baseball tournament means that the eventual national champion can lose up to four games and still win the title. This gives the best teams a slightly larger margin for error and makes Cinderella runs more difficult, which I’ve factored into my college baseball tournament bets and predictions.
Hattiesburg Super Regional: Southern Miss vs. Tennessee
These aren’t the Tennessee Volunteers we’re used to seeing. Although they earned a big upset win over Clemson last weekend, they almost didn’t — the Volunteers entered the ninth inning with a two-run deficit they only overcame with a three-run homer hit with two outs already on the board. Clemson then lost to Charlotte and didn’t get a rematch against Tennessee, likely helping the Volunteers advance.
The Volunteers should run out of luck in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss has one of the nation’s top starters in RHP Tanner Hall, who owns an elite 2.08 ERA through 108 innings pitched. He’ll likely line up against Tennessee’s RHP Andrew Lindsey in Game 1. Lindsey’s 2.40 ERA is similarly impressive, but he has pitched only 63.2 innings and started seven games. Look for the Golden Eagles to start the series with a win in a pitcher’s duel that favors them.
We’re also fading the Volunteers because of their terrible play outside of Knoxville. Their road win last weekend was impressive, but they still went 5-12 on the road this year. RHPs Chase Dollander and Drew Beam, Tennessee’s second and third starters, have seen their ERAs balloon on the road — Dollander’s ticks up to 5.64, while Beam’s skyrockets to 7.11. Beam made it only 4.1 innings against Clemson and recorded an 8.78 ERA.

Fort Worth Super Regional: TCU vs. Indiana State
We hit on Indiana State to win the Terre Haute regional at odds of +235 last weekend, but we’re going to pivot off them and ride with TCU this weekend. The Sycamores have gone an impressive 18-3 at home, but their 24-8 record on the road and 4-9 record against top-50 teams makes this weekend’s trip to Fort Worth a lot more daunting. It’s too bad the Sycamores weren’t able to host.
For as much fun as Indiana State was last round, they got lucky. The Sycamores gave up an early lead to Wright State but rallied in the eighth inning. They played a back-and-forth game against Iowa and only pulled away in — you guessed it — the eighth inning. Indiana State then got to roll a gassed Iowa squad that had to play extras earlier in the day against North Carolina to lock up the super regional bid.
TCU makes their own luck. The Horned Frogs are 10-6 against top-25 teams like Indiana State. They started their season with wins over Vanderbilt and Arkansas, faded down the stretch, but then bounced back just in time to win the Big 12 tournament with an average run differential of 8.3. They then won the Fayetteville regional in three games with an average run differential of 10.3.
