The Los Angeles Clippers find themselves in the unenviable position of having to play back-to-back games as the season comes to a conclusion. They’ll face the Portland Trail Blazers tonight before lining up against the Phoenix Suns in what could prove to be an opening-round preview. The Clippers still have every reason to try, as they can finish anywhere from fifth in the Western Conference to ninth.
Portland has recently given up. The Trail Blazers pulled the plug on the season in late March, and since then, other teams have gotten almost everything they want against Portland, especially from beyond the arc. Since the last time Damian Lillard took the floor for them eight games ago, the Trail Blazers have allowed the second-most above-the-break 3’s per game (10.9) on the third-highest conversion rate (40.4%).
Ever since Paul George went down in late March, the Clippers have trusted Bones Hyland with 20-plus minutes off the bench per game. Hyland has responded by averaging 13.7 points and 2.7 3-pointers, 1.9 of which have come from above the break. More importantly, Hyland tends to see extra usage when the Clippers know they’ll have to play without rest. He returned to the lineup after a one-game absence for a back-to-back set in early March and just saw an above-average workload in the front end of a back-to-back last week.
Hyland owns the third-highest usage rate (25.5%) on the Clippers since George’s injury. He trails only Kawhi Leonard (26.6%) and Russell Westbrook (25.5%). In a game that should devolve into a blowout, expect head coach Tyronn Lue to leave his young guard in for plenty of minutes as he looks to minimize injury risk for his veterans.
